Criminal Probe Of Donald Trump Over 2020 Election Meddling Demanded By Schiff

During a recent appearance on CNN, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) expressed concern about the fact that there’s no apparent ongoing investigation at the Justice Department into certain efforts by former President Donald Trump to undo the results of last year’s presidential election. Trump’s efforts were expansive, including direct pressure on officials in Georgia — where Biden was victorious — to abide by his demands for an adjustment to the final outcome. There’s a criminal investigation into the Georgia meddling underway that’s being conducted by Atlanta-area District Attorney Fani Willis, but there’s no appearance of a similar probe on the federal level.

Schiff compared what Trump did in Georgia to “a criminal effort to defraud the people of Georgia and the people of the country.” As Schiff pointedly put it, addressing CNN host Dana Bash:

‘I am concerned that there does not appear to be an investigation, unless it’s being done very quietly by the Justice Department, of, for example, the former president on the phone with the Georgia Secretary of State asking him to find, really demanding he find 11,780 votes that don’t exist — the precise number he would need to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in that state. I think, Dana, if you or I were on that call and recorded, we’d be under investigation, if not indictment by now for a criminal effort to defraud the people of Georgia and the people of the country.’

As explained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Willis has previously informed Georgia state officials “that her office would be probing potential violations of Georgia law prohibiting criminal solicitation to commit election fraud, intentional interference with the performance of election duties, conspiracy and racketeering, among others.”

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) — the official who received that call from Trump, demanding a fraudulent change to the election results — has stated that he took certain comments from the then-president as a threat. Referring to Raffensperger’s insistence that systematic election fraud had not been present, Trump told him that he “think[s] it’s very dangerous for you to say that.” Raffensperger has stated that he “felt then — and still believes[s] today — that this was a threat. Others obviously thought so, too, because some of Trump’s more radical followers have responded as if it was their duty to carry out this threat.” Raffensperger has received death threats, in addition to the more obvious examples of what he is talking about, like the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
