This week, Senator Chuck Schumer released a letter declaring that he would hold a vote to amend the filibuster because Republican legislators sink Democrat attempts to preserve voting rights. As The Mother Jones publication puts it, he needs votes from “two notorious buzzkills” Manchin and Sinema to overturn the outdated filibuster.

If the filibuster stays Schumer said, “it will be virtually impossible for Democrats to pass the Freedom to Vote Act or the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.” These two bills will stop the Republicans cold, because as the New York Senator said “Republican state legislatures to gerrymander congressional maps and suppress the vote of Democrat-leaning minorities.”‘

Schumer followed up and tweeted about the not-so-Grand Old Party :

‘If Republicans continue to hijack the rules of the Senate to prevent action on protecting our democracy: We will debate and consider changes to the rules on or before January 17, Martin Luther king Jr. Day. The stakes could not be higher. We will move forward.’

Democrats want to use the January 6 Capitol riot anniversary as a way to pressure Manchin and Sinema. But that would be a risky move. A couple of weeks ago, Manchin withstood “fierce criticism from the party” prior to ” single-handedly tank Biden’s entire domestic agenda. Simply put, the odds aren’t high.”
