No matter how the GOP chooses to characterize the violent act of domestic terrorism on January 6, 2021, the truth is that it has undermined Americans’ faith in democracy and gave Republicans, whose supporters still believe the Big Lie, an excuse to pass voter suppression laws.
Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) appeared on MSNBC Saturday to stress the significance of the Jan. 6 attack and the attitude of the former president who cheered it on. With the GOP’s moves in red states and traditionally red states that went blue in the 2020 election to suppress the vote, gerrymander districts, and make voting tougher for poor and black and brown people, democracy continues to be on the brink.
Axios reports that Schumer said in a letter to his colleagues:
‘Much like the violent insurrectionists who stormed the US Capitol nearly one year ago, Republican officials in states across the country have seized on the former president’s Big Lie about widespread voter fraud to enact anti-democratic legislation and seize control of typically non-partisan election administration functions.’
The fact that America’s own elected officials were involved in a plan to subvert democracy and install a wanna-be dictator in the White House should be concerning to every voter in the U.S. It is more important than ever to get out the vote in the 2022 midterms and save democracy.
