Lisa Murkowski Berates Colleagues Over ‘Legit Political Discourse’

Since Donald Trump took over the Republican Party, no one is quite sure what the philosophy behind the party’s nonexistent platform is anymore. Surely, the Republicans who once held to ideals of individual liberties, and fiscal conservatism have no place in the modern GOP, as the new philosophy that has taken hold has nothing to do with those values. Today, the GOP is nothing more than the party of whatever Donald Trump wants it to be.

Along those lines, Republicans who dare to disagree with Trump, even to call out his incitement of an attempted coup, are no longer in line with the party. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), both of whom serve on the January 6th committee investigating Trump and his cronies for their part in the insurrection, were censured by their party. A number of prominent Republicans who once held to different values have responded to that censure.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said on Twitter that:

‘What happened on January 6, 2021 was an effort to overturn a lawful election resulting in violence and destruction at the Capitol. We must not legitimize those actions which resulted in loss of life and we must learn from that horrible event so history does not repeat itself…As Americans we must acknowledge those tragic events, and we cannot allow a false narrative to be created. We cannot deny the truth—to suggest it was “legitimate political discourse” is just wrong.’

Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland, a longtime Republican and the only governor to be re-elected in the history of the state, had similar criticism to offer. Hogan has been a GOP favorite for some time but is sure to draw outrage from Trump, who will call him a RINO and endorse a primary challenger.

Hogan tweeted:

‘The GOP I believe in is the party of freedom and truth. It’s a sad day for my party—and the country—when you’re punished just for expressing your beliefs, standing on principle, and refusing to tell blatant lies.’

Michael Steele, who once served as the head of the Republican National Committee, expressed his own condemnation of the party’s move to censure the two Republican members of Congress. Mike Duhaime, who once served as chief strategist for Chris Christie’s campaign for Governor of New Jersey, called the GOP “insane.”

‘The RNC is insane if it censures @RepKinzinger and @RepLizCheney. The party that long valued individuality and differences of opinion now demands fealty to the election results lie. And it stupidly keeps the focus Trump instead of Biden.’
