Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is not wavering from her commitment to help lay out the truth of January 6 amid rounds and rounds of rhetorical attacks and procedural stonewalling from former President Trump and some allies of his. Cheney wrote a new opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal in which she, among other things, spotlighted some of the circumstances that led to this juncture in the national political environment — including, for instance, the facts of Trump’s attempts to pressure then-VP Pence in his role overseeing the Congressional proceedings to certify the election outcome to keep Biden’s win from moving forward. Trump was flatly incorrect in his assertions that Pence could have legally undertaken such a move, as the Wyoming Republican noted.

Cheney added this week as follows:

‘Republicans used to advocate fidelity to the rule of law and the plain text of the Constitution. In 2020, Mr. Trump convinced many to abandon those principles… As the Select Committee will demonstrate in hearings later this year, no foreign power corrupted America’s voting machines, and no massive secret fraud changed the election outcome. Almost all members of Congress know this—although many lack the courage to say it out loud. Mr. Trump knew it too, from his own campaign officials, from his own appointees at the Justice Department, and from the dozens of lawsuits he lost. Yet, Mr. Trump ignored the rulings of the courts and launched a massive campaign to mislead the public.’

Cheney added that the “Jan. 6 investigation isn’t only about the inexcusable violence of that day: It is also about fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law, and whether elected representatives believe in those things or not” — and accordingly, the probe will be moving forward. She observed that “[those] who do not wish the truth of Jan. 6 to come out have predictably resorted to attacking the process—claiming it is tainted and political. Our hearings will show this charge to be wrong. We are focused on facts, not rhetoric, and we will present those facts without exaggeration, no matter what criticism we face.” Read more at this link.

The riot investigation committee is planning rounds of public hearings for the near future, where those involved in the panel will be able to essentially lay out the case that they’ve assembled for the American people. Despite Trump’s obstruction, they’ve made some strides, such as the obtaining of hundreds of pages of records from his administration that he wanted to keep hidden from investigators because of claims of executive privilege. One of the committee’s most recent moves was to subpoena ex-Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro, who was among those involved alongside Trump in attempts to overturn Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. Navarro “reportedly worked with Steve Bannon and others to develop and implement a plan to delay Congress’s certification of, and ultimately change the outcome of, the November 2020 presidential election,” a press release from the committee notes. He’s claimed that over 100 members of Congress were supportive of the initiative.
