There was a time that seems to have died with Ronald Reagan when the Republican Party knew that Communist dictators, including and sometimes especially the ones in charge in Russia, were not friends of the United States and posed a danger to democratic nations everywhere. Enter Donald Trump, and the party that once declared themselves the party of patriots have become the party of Russia.
Trump says Putin's military move on Ukraine is "genius."
"Putin is now saying, 'It’s independent,' a large section of Ukraine. I said, 'How smart is that?' And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper… We could use that on our southern border."

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Russia-friendly areas of Ukraine independent nations and then moved troops and military equipment into those areas to “monitor” others and protect Russian people from the far poorer and fledgling country of Ukraine. It was a clear act of aggression that put many in mind of the strategies that led to the formation of the U.S.S.R., whose demise Putin has called a tragedy.
On Tuesday, the twice-impeached ex-president who lost the popular vote twice appeared on the Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, a conservative podcast friendly to Trump. Calling Putin “savvy” for his moves in Ukraine, the incredibly un-savvy former president proved once again just how terrifying the thought of him having been in charge of the country’s nuclear codes really is while bowing and scraping to the Russian dictator, even musing that similar tactics should be used to prevent poor brown people from immigrating to the U.S. from Mexico.
‘I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius,'” Trump recalled. “Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful.” I said, :How smart is that?!” the former U.S. president continued. “And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s the strongest peace force… We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy.’
Twitter was equally horrified by Trump’s words as anyone with any modicum of knowledge about foreign policy and the situation in Ukraine is hearing him say them. Read some of their comments below:
