Liz Cheney Goes After Marjorie Greene For Enabling White Supremacy

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is continuing her fierce opposition to the involvement by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in this year’s edition of a white supremacist event known as the America First Political Action Conference. Greene recently spoke at the event, and she’s stuck by her appearance there — this weekend, she even promoted clips of her speech to the gathering on her official Twitter account. Cheney concernedly commented as follows:

‘Marjorie Taylor Greene now [is] using her official USG congressional account to promote [an] anti-Semitic, white supremacist, pro-Hitler, pro-Putin conference. This is a toxin in the bloodstream of America. It must stop. House GOP Leaders: Have you lost all sense of decency?’

Greene is a close ally of Trump — so while allying herself with white supremacists, she isn’t just a fringe voice. The white supremacy at the event wasn’t subtle, either; a speaker who appeared after Greene insisted that “Western white culture is the majority culture, to which even non-whites assimilate into today — and they’re better off for it,” so… yeah. That’s not exactly subtle! Greene defended her participation in the gathering by insisting that she’s “not going to play the guilt by association game in which you demand every conservative should justify anything ever said by anyone they’ve ever shared a room with” — but this isn’t some kind of easily dismissable issue here. It’s white supremacy, spread at an event promoted by a sitting member of the United States Congress (well, more than one such member — GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona has also been involved). Does Greene have a meaningful grasp of this reality? She’s just about constantly in melodramatic culture war mode, and it’s frankly embarrassing, in addition to its damaging implications.

Cheney has also previously criticized Greene’s involvement in the America First event over pro-Putin sentiments that were spread there this year. Organizer Nick Fuentes got attendees to applaud “for Russia,” and some of those in the crowd subsequently chanted Putin’s name. These sentiments were expressed amid Russia’s devastating invasion of Ukraine, which has killed at least hundreds of civilians in the country and displaced hundreds of thousands. The latest count of refugees from Ukraine in relation to the conflict is over half a million, as shared by Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Cheney commented about the America First gathering that “As Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rep Paul Gosar speak at this white supremacist, anti-Semitic, pro-Putin event, silence by Republican Party leaders is deafening and enabling. All Americans should renounce this garbage and reject the Putin wing of the GOP now.”
