Trump supporters and Fox News fans love nothing more than a good conspiracy theory, and the latest is that the United States has partnered with Ukraine to create biological weapons in biolabs across the country.
Fox News host and head conspiracy theorist, Sean Hannity, seemed willing to embrace those already debunked stories, story the right-wing crazies had picked up from Russia and spread across social media. Jennifer Griffin, the Fox News national security correspondent, was quick to push back against the nonsense.
Griffin said that the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, had already discussed the presence of biolabs in Ukraine and White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a press conference that Russia’s attempts to spin the purpose of the biolabs and the threat to them by Ukraine are laughable.
Hannity tried to preserve the conspiracy theory, but Griffin wasn’t having it.
Hannity:  Jennifer, but we do know that Victoria Nuland admitted that labs existed. What exactly they’re for, we never got clarity on, correct?
Griffin: Well, we do have clarity. I have a fact sheet—that’s what I was just reading—from the Pentagon.
Griffin stated earlier in the day that Russia is known for blaming others for anything they plan to do themselves. The concern by national security experts is that there is a plan to use chemical weapons in Ukraine and that Russian President Vladimir Putin was setting up a story about how he had no choice because Ukraine, especially when backed by the U.S., is such a threat to the people of Russia.
Griffin explained further by saying that:
‘It is a long program that has existed where the Pentagon has partnered with these biolabs. These were Soviet-era labs that—remember the Nunn-Lugar Bill and trying to deal with proliferation when the Soviet Union ended—that is part of this effort to try to clean up those Soviet-era labs and make sure that nothing escapes from those labs. And so the U.S. has been very open about its involvement there with that. But what Russia does is they take that information, distort it, turn it around, and turn it into disinformation.’
Hannity may have tried to help Russia by spreading their disinformation, but ended up looking foolish for embracing one more conspiracy theory. Twitter got quite a kick out of seeing Hannity humiliated on his own show. Read some of their comments below:
