On Monday, a grand jury indictment against Russian oligarch Andrey Muraviev, 47 was released, accusing him of “violating campaign finance laws,” according to The POLITICO. That meant the grand jury found enough evidence to send the case to trial. He was charged with underhandedly sending foreign money into American election campaigns, which is illegal. Word has it that Muraviev is still in Russia where American law cannot reach him.
U.S. Attorney Damian William said the oligarch had been trying to beat America’s political system in order to profit his businesses. It appeared that Muraviev may have been involved in illegal activity with three other men Igor Fruman, Andrey Kukushkin, and Giuliani associate Lev Parnas. These other men were charged and convicted of violating campaign finance laws.
Parnas recently changed his plea from ‘not guilty’ to ‘guilty attorney Joseph Bondy said:
‘Mr. Parnas believes the time is right for him now to accept responsibility.’
All four men opened a small retail cannabis business early in 2018. That way they could funnel Muraviev’s million dollars through it and into midterm campaigns. They set it up with the appropriate marijuana licenses, our Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed.
The DOJ said Mariviev was trying to launder the money through Fruman’s brother’s bank account. Then as criminals often do, the oligarch would donate in the money under Fruman’s and Parnas’ names.
NPR reported that oligarchs come by that name as a Russian peculiarity.
