Vladimir Putin’s plan against Ukraine has been to capture a city either by force or by the medieval strategy of surrounding and starving the population. Melitopol in southwestern Ukraine was one of the first cities his armies took.
Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov disappeared last week, according to CNN. After armed Russians captured him, they covered his head and paraded him downtown. Hostage-taking has been a serious ratcheting up of the Russian military situation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy labeled it as a “new stage of terror.”
A senior official in Zelenskyy’s administration Kyrylo Tymoshenko released this message to the media:
‘A special operation to release the mayor of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov has just been successfully completed. Vanya is safe. We just talked to him together with the president and the head of the Office. I would like to say only one thing – we never leave our people. Ivan will return to his duties as mayor of Ukrainian Melitopol very soon.’
The Ukrainian president called the rescued mayor and said:
‘It’s great to hear the voice of a living guy.’
The courage and national dedication to democracy of the Ukrainian people shone through as Fedorov planned to go right back to his mayoral job. He did say that he might want:
‘One or two days to recover and then I’ll be at your command to contribute to our victory.’
President Zelenskyy’s administration captured his phone conversation with the mayor and shared it online. The mayor was especially grateful to his country’s president for “not abandoning me.”
