Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson held up well in spite of the rough series of questions several Republicans pummeled her with during the Senate Judiciary Committee Supreme Court nominee hearing. But how does America feel about her? A new Gallup poll answers that.

Judge Jackson walked into the homes of Americans via cable news during the grueling 13-plus-hours day of questioning. And would it be surprising that America likes her better than nearly all of the other Supreme Court nominees, 58 percent, for the initial support?

The question posed to interviewees during the survey was, NPR reported:

‘Would you like to see the Senate vote in favor of [name of nominee] serving on the Supreme Court, or not?’

She came in with that 58 percent, about the same as Chief Justice John Roberts with 59 percent in 2005, a full 10 percentage points higher than most of the others nominees. The average initial reaction for the majority of nominees comes in with around 50 percent, give or take a few points higher or lower.

As far as who wanted Judge Jackson confirmed, self-declared Democrats gave her an 88 percent approval rating. The all-important Independents came in at 55 percent. And a surprisingly high percentage of Republicans wanted her to replace Justice Stephen Breyer after he retires, 31 percent.

Her time before the committee began on Monday and continued through Wednesday.

The committee is divided equally between Republicans and Democrats. But there are far more Independents and Democrats than members of the GOP in America. Therefore, the hearing did not accurately reflect the makeup of the nation.

Some of the question were based upon conspiracy theories held as truth along the vein of the amorphous organization called Q-Anon. Many were simply talking points for the 2022 elections. All were clearly in the minority, among Americans.

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked Jackson about her views on abortion, claiming ultra-right views as truth, instead of mainstream opinions.

Jackson was a Supreme Court law clerk for Justice Breyer in 1999, The Atlantic Magazine reported. During Justice Breyer’s 1999-2000 session, perhaps his most notable case was the Stenberg v. Carhart, an abortion case:

‘By a vote of 5–4, the court struck down a Nebraska law that made it a felony to perform a so-called partial-birth abortion, a potent term invented by abortion-rights opponents to describe a technique sometimes used to terminate a second-trimester pregnancy.’

‘The statute contained no health exception, despite expert testimony at trial stating that for some women, the technique was safer than other more common ways of performing a late-term abortion.’

Senator Blackburn called Jackson someone who “attacked pro-life women” and accused the judge of being “hostile” toward these women. Blackburn also claimed Jackson used and “incendiary rhetoric against pro-life women,” The New York Times reported:

‘[T]hese women’s First Amendment right to express their sincerely held views regarding the sanctity of each individual life.’

Compared to Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, Jackson did exceedingly better with her 58 percentage points. Their approval numbers were, according to the latest Gallup poll:

  • Amy Coney Barrett, 51 percent approval
  • Neil Gorsuch, 45 percent and
  • Brett Kavanaugh, 41 percent.

This Gallup poll interviewed a randomly-selected 1,017 interviewees from March 1 through March 18. The margin of error was +/- 4 percent, which was relatively high.
