The entire West is at near-war with Russia whether it is by supplying Ukraine with tanks, howitzers, drones, or equipment to protect against chemical attacks or verbal attacks. People across America have been asking how they can help. And the group Anonymous has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, declaring all-out cyberwar on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

And Anonymous knows how to hack. This time it lifted “776 gigabytes (GB)” of “Kremlin files.” Specifically, the secretive group honored its promise to “infiltrate and disrupt the Russian war.” It hacked the Ministry of Culture and then leaked that information to the world, according to The Guardian.

Anonymous  is officially at cyberwar against the Russian government. According to reports, Anonymous has breached Kremlin institutions and Russian companies in its cyber attacks.

The data dump includes:.

  • ‘Censorship, archives, and art from the Russian Ministry of Culture 200,000 emails, which has oversight over censorship, archives, and art.
  • These individuals also hijacked emails and data from a state-backed oil and gas company called Aerogas.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense database.
  • ‘[M]ultiple state TV channels to show pro-Ukraine content.’

Then, Anonymous posted the information they found on the whistleblower DDoSecrets, which may be “the new Wikileaks.” Anonymous has posted information there showing “political corruption and two-faced lobbying.”

The West has been looking into incidents of Russia setting chemical weapons on the Ukrainian people, military and civilian. Now, using chemical weapons has been deemed a “violation of wartime ethics.” Possibly, NATO or a NATO country could respond if they wished.

Anonymous has been “an informal collective that makes it difficult to attribute these attacks to Anonymous definitively.” A consultant at the US cybersecurity organization Mandiant, Jamie Collier said:

‘It can be difficult to directly tie this activity to Anonymous, as targeted entities will likely be reluctant to publish related technical data. However, the Anonymous collective has a track record of conducting this sort of activity and it is very much in line with their capabilities.’

A British diplomat told  The UK Independent:

‘There are some things that are beyond the pale.’

Note to the public from Anonymous:

‘This dataset was released in the buildup to, in the midst of, or in the aftermath of a cyberwar or hybrid war. Therefore, there is an increased chance of malware, ulterior motives and altered or implanted data, or false flags/fake personas. As a result, we encourage readers, researchers and journalists to take additional care with the data’.

The West has supported Ukraine as Russia has backed Belarus, both previously under the former USSR umbrella. Anonymous’ slogan is “Veritatem cognoscere ruat cælum et pereat mundus” which is translated into English from the Latin means:

‘Know the truth, though the heavens may fall and the world burn.’

Time will tell.
