President Joe Biden bases his energy decisions on efficiency and sets 30-year goals. Right now, Americans still use incandescent “old-fashioned” lightbulbs for 30 percent of their lighting needs. His administration is in the process of implementing “a lighting revolution” by the end of the year.
The lightning lighting rollout will save Americans $3 billion every year. In addition, it will cut “carbon emissions by 222 metric tons over the next 30 years.” The Department of Energy will require incandescent bulbs manufacturers produce LED lightbulbs. And it will ban any of the inefficient incandescent and halogen lightbulbs The purpose is to reduce energy consumption and sever America’s attachment to the older bulbs. Doing so will dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm noted that America will use, “efficient and compact fluorescent and LED bulbs,” The Washington Post reported:
‘[Cut] carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years, roughly equivalent to what 28 million homes generate annually.’
Biden administration officials estimate:
‘By raising energy efficiency standards for lightbulbs, we’re putting $3 billion back in the pockets of American consumers and substantially reducing domestic carbon emissions.’
Secretary Granholm has worked to reverse the previous administration’s non-efficiency standards for items used in most American homes. These include washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
Then, there were shower standards that the former administration changed to give the then-president greater water pressure. Granholm closed the previous administration’s use of a loophole “allowing multiple nozzles to carry equal amounts of water at once.”
 Administration officials aim to complete 100 energy-efficiency actions this year:
‘The lighting industry is already embracing more energy efficient products, and this measure will accelerate progress to deliver the best products to American consumers and build a better and brighter future.’
Secretary Granholm released a statement that read:
‘By raising energy efficiency standards for lightbulbs, we’re putting $3 billion back in the pockets of American consumers and substantially reducing domestic carbon emissions. The lighting industry is already embracing more energy efficient products, and this measure will accelerate progress to deliver the best products to American consumers and build a better and brighter future.’
The change to LEDs may have unintended consequences. For example, the lighting association The American Lighting Association requested the president postpone his standards for two years to prevent serious results:
‘[Moving away faster to LEDs, causes ] major financial losses [for lighting manufacturers and retailers and] a glut of stranded inventory, piling up at individual showrooms and eventually landfills.’
Donald Trump emotionally came down on LED lighting, because “The light’s no good. I always look orange,” CNN reported at the time.
