Adam Kinzinger Mercilessly Mocks Madison Cawthorn After Election Loss

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) has by all appearances lost the Republican primary for his Congressional seat, meaning — unless something big suddenly changes — he won’t be returning to the House in 2023 for a second term. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) took the opportunity to roast Cawthorn, who’s always seemed over-confident and eager to attract attention — and will apparently be departing Congress because voters picked someone not so desperate to engage in theatrics.

Alongside a screenshot of past coverage showing Cawthorn proclaiming he’d be “defeating Adam Kinzinger, or scaring him so much he decides not to run,” Kinzinger wrote: “Congrats to [Country First] supporters for helping to successfully defeat [Cawthorn]! I’d also like to remind Madison that, well, irony is alive and well.” Country First is a PAC Kinzinger founded, which markets itself as “dedicated to defeating the Toxic Tribalism tearing our families, friendships, and country apart.” “Donald Trump endorsed [Cawthorn]. [Cawthorn] lost. Ouch,” Kinzinger added on Twitter.

Kinzinger wasn’t done. “This didn’t age well,” Kinzinger quipped in response to a pre-election video in which Cawthorn said: “We will win.” “Didn’t work,” Kinzinger added in reply to a post from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) asking voters to back Cawthorn. Cawthorn was bested in the Republican primary by North Carolina state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who had support from prominent Republicans like North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis and prominent members of North Carolina’s state legislature. “There’s no one thing that put me in a position to where the first time in my career I’m opposing a sitting Republican… I’ve never done it. But it’s the totality. It’s a lack of seriousness,” Tillis told CNN before the election. Not a single fellow Republican representing some part of North Carolina in Congress apparently expressed support for Cawthorn’s re-election bid when asked before the primary by CNN. Now, early Wednesday results showed Cawthorn about 1.5 percent behind Edwards. The Associated Press called the race for Edwards.

Surprisingly — after all, Cawthorn’s among those who supported Trump’s crusade against the 2020 results — Cawthorn conceded to Edwards. “Congratulations to [Chuck Edwards] on securing the nomination tonight. It’s time for the NC-11 GOP to rally behind the Republican ticket to defeat the Democrats’ nominee this November,” Cawthorn wrote on Twitter. Cawthorn has faced a formidable list of scandals — he’s been twice caught with a gun at an airport, claimed “bloodshed” was inevitable if U.S. elections keep getting rigged (they’re not rigged), was caught driving with a revoked license and speeding (on separate occasions), and the list goes on. Cawthorn was also caught, for instance, engaging in potential insider trading involving a pro-Trump cryptocurrency named after the “Let’s Go Brandon!” phrase that some right-wingers use against President Biden. Elsewhere in Tuesday’s primaries, the Pennsylvania Republican primary for the state’s soon-opening Senate seat was too close to call early Wednesday, although Mehmet Oz (aka Dr. Oz) — Trump’s pick — had a 0.2 percent lead.
