Secretary Hillary Clinton and her husband President Bill Clinton stood hands to heart in memory of “those who lost their lives fighting for this,” our great democracy. We now come to a crossroads just 21.5 weeks away from the midterm elections, perhaps the most consequential elections in our lifetimes. If Democrats do not generate powerful momentum, we may lose that Democracy.
Clinton said “let’s keep working toward…liberty and justice for all.” The Ukrainians value their Democracy so highly, that they are willing to take on the entire Russian military. On the other hand, Americans have long taken their democracy for granted. Check out what it looks like to live under a dictatorship, Russian President Vladimir Putin, later. Masha Gessen wrote for The New Yorker about Inside Putin’s Propaganda Machine.
The former Secretary of State reminded Americans to use Memorial Day for “reflections, gratitude, and family:”
‘To honor those who lost their lives fighting for this country, let’s keep working toward an America of liberty and justice for all. Wishing you a Memorial Day full of reflection, gratitude, and family.’
President Joe Biden’s son was in the military where the president believes he was exposed to cancer-causing carcinogens. He died exactly seven years ago, on Memorial Day. Before returning back to Delaware to place a wreath on his son’s grave, our president went to comfort those who lost their 10-year-old children to a gunman who killed 19. President Biden promised “We’re committed to turning this pain into action:”
‘To everyone impacted by the horrific elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas: We grieve with you. We pray with you. We stand with you. And we’re committed to turning this pain into action.’
Conversely, Donald Trump called those who lost their lives to save our democracy “Losers” and “Suckers,” The Atlantic magazine wrote. Another young man had to go to war so that he could get a doctor’s note exempting him from Vietnam. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) nicknamed him ‘Cadet Bone Spurs,” according to CNBC News. The retired lieutenant colonel and Black Hawk pilot was almost left for dead and ended up, as The Daily Herald reported:
‘[She lost] both legs after her helicopter was shot down by insurgents near Taji, Iraq, in 2004.’
Take a look at what some of our fellow Democrats/Independents had to say about Clinton’s words:
‘Considering the state of #GunViolence in America, your country is still at war and many many innocents are being killed! #Murica’
Then there was this one showing the memorial to all veterans, the poppy fields:
‘I honor the memory of the people who served and died for our freedom in “the highest and purest democracy” youtu.be/v886NgjSOF0 #LestWeForget’
As our president left Uvalde Sunday morning to a chorus of chants repeating “do something.” He stood up and promised “We will:”
‘President Joe Biden grieved with the community of Uvalde on Sunday, mourning privately for three hours with the families of the 19 children and two teachers killed by a gunman. Faced with chants of “do something” as he departed a church service, Biden pledged: “We will.”’
Hopefully, he can produce.
