“From all at The Lincoln Project, to all who have lost a loved servicemember: On this and every #MemorialDay, we respect and honor your loss and are forever grateful to those who gave their lives to protect our freedom and democracy,” The Lincoln Project said in a Twitter post on Monday in honor of Memorial Day. The post included a video in which a narrator says as follows:

‘In every generation, they stand. In every generation, they serve. In every generation, they sacrifice. For two and a half centuries, on land, sea, and in the air, they’ve fought and died for an idea bigger than themselves. They are the Americans of every race and faith who swear a sacred oath of honor and live it to the last. And when that moment comes, they lay down their lives for the country they love, protecting their comrades, their families, and their nation. They are the bold angels now — examples to us all. On this day, let us honor their sacrifice and call upon ourselves to walk in their footsteps, boldly — for they have led the way to the America we must be.’

Others, such as former President Barack Obama and current President Joe Biden, also shared remarks early Monday honoring the occasion. “On Memorial Day, we honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and pray for their families—who still love and grieve for them. May God bless our fallen heroes and all who serve,” Obama said. “On Memorial Day, we remember the patriots who gave their lives in the service of America, in the service of freedom, and in the service of justice. We are free because they were brave, and we live by the light of the flame of liberty they kept burning. We are forever grateful,” a Monday Twitter post from Biden added.

With many Republicans — and the current party leader — presently focused in large part on obsessions with the last presidential election, could the disconnection between the GOP and the needs of everyday Americans defended by fallen U.S. service members be more clear? Americans are in need — and Republican officials are sticking by leaving dangerous firearms broadly available, imposing new restrictions around elections… and fighting Disney. Republican “culture war” pushes aren’t just ridiculous — they leave real-world Americans behind. And if certain prominent Republicans haven’t changed their paths yet — if House GOP leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), for instance, still slavishly sticks with Trump even after originally publicly acknowledging the responsibility the then-president held for the attack last year at the Capitol — then is there pretty much anything that could actually get these Republicans to change their positions?
