January 6 Committee members will reveal explosive new evidence this week. They hope it will inform America of how close democracy came to dying according to NPR.
The Select Committee interviewed 1,000 people and sifted through “thousands of communications” between those inside of the White House and those outside of it before, during, and after the failed coup on January 6. The Committee plans to tell the entire story:
‘[Its top] investigative counsel reveals previously secret White House records, photos, and videos that will be presented, in real-time, to starkly illustrate the live witness testimony.’
Committee Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice-Chair Liz Cheney plan to make their “opening arguments” about how Trump committed voter fraud in his attempt to steal the 2020 election and beyond. And how he tried to implant “fake electors” so that the election would go to a Republican Congress and put the ex-president back in office. .
Apparently, the names of the witnesses who will give testimony are still fluid:
‘[I]t is expected to include top aides to former vice-president Mike Pence, aides to Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, and people with direct knowledge of militia group activities on 6 January.’
For example, one tell is that although Trump said he was going to lead the attack from the Ellipse to the Capitol Building, he really never intended to do so.
Ornstein added:
‘I don’t have any expectation that Republicans who believe the election was stolen will change their minds. But it’s about the other voters and whether it will jolt the Democratic base into understanding what the stakes are.’
Thursday should be very interesting if the Select Committee can avoid the dual-sided dangers of getting too technical or putting themselves into the hearings’ narrative too much.
