In a newly available portion of an interview Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) did with CBS, she spoke of the historical nature of present circumstances and the urgency with which Americans should approach protecting the country and what it stands for over sticking with partisan politics.

That could sound like a given — but, well, it’s not. As Cheney also recently mentioned, there’s what seems to be a cult of personality around former President Donald Trump in the present-day GOP. So many prominent Republicans, from members of leadership in Congress to rank-and-file officials from across the country, seem far more interested in staying connected with whatever will get them ahead politically than protecting the basic democratic principles upon which the country was founded. Accepting the outcomes of elections shouldn’t be an open question!

“I’ve thought a lot recently, especially about my great-great grandfather, who fought in the Union Army in the Civil War,” Cheney said. “And I think about what he did. I think about what generations have done to hand to us this incredible jewel, this unbelievable blessing of this country. I am going to do everything possible that I can do to make sure that one irrational, dangerous former president doesn’t destroy that.”

She also laid out the need for Americans to essentially band together for a stand on behalf of the country’s democratic principles that, as she cast it, would amount to a profound refutation of Trump and what he stands for. The former president was seemingly willing to throw out the people’s will, which was securely documented — and that willingness is a serious threat. “We are thankfully not at a moment of civil war, but we are certainly at a time of testing,” Cheney remarked. “We are absolutely at a moment where we have to make a decision about whether we’re going to put our love of this country above partisanship. And to me, there is just — there’s no gray area in that question. And every American should be able to say we love our country more.”

“At this time of testing, we have to make a decision about whether we are going to put our love of this country above partisanship. There is no gray area. Every American should be able to say that we love our country more,” Cheney added on Twitter. Watch Cheney’s comments below:

Cheney serves as vice chair of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, which will soon be starting a new round of public hearings, with the first installment set for June 9. At these hearings, the committee will lay out the evidence it’s collected — their probe has focused on the violence itself but also its causes, including the months-long campaign from Trump and numerous allies of his to discredit the duly documented outcome of the 2020 presidential election. It’s striking that some such allies — like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — remain in positions of power despite their previous opposition to basic democratic processes.
