Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, laid out this weekend how more evidence is on the way from the panel as it keeps moving through a series of public hearings planned for June. (The next is Monday, June 13.) Discussing this evidence on ABC, Schiff directly implicated Trump once again in what happened at the Capitol last year.
Trump’s culpability in what happened isn’t an open question. “Our first hearing was just a sample of the evidence we’ve gathered. Tomorrow, we’ll tell the story of how Trump knowingly propagated his Big Lie. Then used that lie to pressure legislators, the Vice President, and, ultimately, summon the mob. The public deserves to know,” Schiff said alongside an ABC clip in which he says as follows:
‘I think you have heard a good sampling of what you’re going to see in the hearings to come. The evidence is very powerful that Donald Trump began telling this “big lie” even before the election, that he was saying that any ballots counted after Election Day were going to be inherently suspect. That lie continued after the election and ultimately led to this mob assembling and attacking the Capitol… There’s a lot more testimony where [previously revealed snippets of testimony] came from. And I think most important is that we’re weaving together how each line of effort to overturn the election led to another, led to another, and then ultimately culminated in that violent attack on January 6.’

The first public hearing in this new series from the riot panel featured startling moments like a clip of Ivanka Trump — the ex-president’s daughter, who worked in his administration — saying in committee testimony she believed attestations from then-Attorney General Bill Barr that the 2020 presidential election was secure. Barr, in footage shared last Thursday at that riot panel hearing, also restated his lack of belief in the ex-president’s nonsensical fraud claims. And in conjunction with the riot, Trump “placed no call to any element of the U.S. government to instruct that the Capitol be defended,” vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said at the panel’s hearing last Thursday. At the committee hearing scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern, Chris Stirewalt will apparently testify. Stirewalt was a political editor at Fox News when the network’s political desk correctly called Arizona for Biden as 2020 presidential election results began to emerge.
Stirewalt was fired from Fox, which Rupert Murdoch claimed wasn’t connected to the network’s political desk calling Arizona for Biden. That call wasn’t exactly popular, for obvious reasons, in the former president’s circles. Stirewalt has previously spoken against right-wing lies around the 2020 presidential election, which Trump, of course, still falsely says was rigged. The “rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying,” Stirewalt said. Other apparently likely future public witnesses at committee proceedings include former members of then-VP Pence’s staff and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who infamously resisted pressure from Trump to meddle with his state’s presidential election outcome.
