During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union this weekend, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) indicated new witnesses have come forward to the House committee investigating the Capitol riot since Cassidy Hutchinson, a former Trump White House aide, publicly testified. Kinzinger didn’t identify the witnesses.

Kinzinger said Hutchinson has been “inspiring for a lot of people.” That’s not just a kind of general sentiment — it reflects the committee standing by Hutchinson as she faces continuing, intense criticism from Trump himself and other figures associated with the former president. Kinzinger added as follows:

‘This happens every day. Every day, we get new people that come forward and say: hey, I didn’t think maybe this piece of a story that I knew was important, but now that you guys are — I do see this plays in here. But yeah, I mean look: [Hutchinson] is going to go down in history. People can forget the names of every one of us on the committee; they will not forget her name. And by the way, she doesn’t want that. She doesn’t want to be out in the public spotlight. But she has a commitment to truth that somebody like Kristi Noem for instance and most people in our party would actually benefit to take just a 10 percent ounce of.’

In other words, it’s clear attempts by Trump to push back on Hutchinson’s testimony and the work of the riot panel in a more general sense aren’t working. That’s not for a lack of effort: Trump has basically spent days going after Hutchinson. On Sunday morning, he took to his alternative social media platform known as Truth Social to characterize the former White House aide as essentially harboring resentment over an alleged rejection — which there’s no apparent evidence actually took place. “So Cassidy Hutchinson was all set and ready to go to Florida with the Trump Team long after January 6th,” Trump claimed. “She knew I did nothing wrong. She was a big Trump fan – but my people didn’t want her. What happened? Why did she so dramatically change? All lies. I guess even she didn’t believe her own bull….!”

Hutchinson — who has spoken in private with the committee several times — has revealed an array of startling details. She had personal access to key moments during Trump’s time in office; she was even apparently in the then-president’s entourage when he went to the infamous outdoor rally in D.C. where he spoke ahead of the Capitol breach. Hutchinson says she personally witnessed a conversation in which Trump acknowledged and basically accepted the threat posed by weapons in the crowd of his supporters in D.C. that day. Specifically, the former aide says Trump pushed for magnetometers used in the security screening process for his January 6 rally to be removed. (Trump’s specifically pushed back on that portion of Hutchinson’s revelations.) For him to have acted as Hutchinson claimed would implicate him in knowingly inciting violence at the Capitol he was aware could be even more dangerous considering the weapons among the crowd members.
