The Texas gubernatorial race sets Republican Greg Abbott, he of the “critical race theory” ban and unyielding assault weapon support, against Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who supports actual policies and spends time comforting and supporting the families of the victims of school shootings.
Now, O’Rourke has raised a record-setting amount in donations to aid him in the race. With $27.6 million in donations raised since February, O’Rourke is set to campaign until November 2022, where he will hopefully take the race.
With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, sure to be felt by women and families with a state abortion ban in Texas imminent, as well as the Uvalde school shooting which left police and GOP government officials with blood on their hands, the governor’s race has become all that much more important.
According to The Texas Tribune, O’Rourke said that:
‘We’re receiving support from people in every part of Texas who want to work together to ensure our state moves beyond Greg Abbott’s extremism and finally leads in great jobs, world class schools, the ability to see a doctor, keeping our kids safe and protecting a woman’s freedom to make her own decisions about her own body, health care and future.’
Governor Abbott, a big supporters of the ex-president who tried to steal an election in 2020, once held a 15-point lead over his opponent. Today, that lead has shrunk to just five percent.
Twitter had a lot to say about the news of O’Rourke’s record-setting haul. Read some of their comments below:
