Trump Has Terrified Conniption Fit Over Liz Cheney As The Law Closes In

Donald Trump continues facing an expansive list of investigations, including the probe underway from the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, where Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is vice chair.

Cheney, who consistently criticizes Trump over his election-related conspiracy theories, recently lost the primary in her race for re-election. Trump sought in the aftermath to characterize the loss as some kind of referendum on the January 6 panel, although results in Wyoming don’t necessarily reflect the country as a whole. Even Fox polling (from August) found 65 percent of overall respondents said it was at least somewhat important for “Congress and the Justice Department to investigate the events that took place at the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021.”

Trump kept going after the House riot committee this week. “Liz Cheney is having little luck getting people to focus on the Fake Unselect Committee after losing tremendous credibility in her record setting loss in Wyoming,” Donald ranted on Truth Social. “She lost by almost 40 points, and now she wants to tell other politicians “how to do it.” Also, people are beginning to focus on the fact that because I recommended 10,000 to 20,000 troops on January 3rd, which recommendation was turned down by Pelosi and the D.C. Mayor, I cannot be held accountable – But maybe they can!”

In the days before January 6, Nancy Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser didn’t block then-President Trump from deploying troops to protect the Capitol. It’s not even clear either official possesses the legal power to do so. Previously, testimony from Christopher Miller, who was acting Defense Secretary at the time of the Capitol riot, also confirmed there was no formal presidential directive for that level of troop deployment before January 6. Miller indicated as much in testimony to the House riot panel, which was conducted privately. The committee released a clip.

Trump might be concerned because Cheney indicated after her loss that she intends to continue her involvement in the political scene. “I’m going to be very focused on working to ensure that we do everything we can not to elect election deniers, and I’m going to work against those people. I’m going to work to support their opponents,” she explained during an ABC interview. “I think it matters that much.” She also previously indicated she will campaign against Trump in some capacity if he runs for the presidency again in 2024.
