In America’s dark age following the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) overturning Roe v. Wade, Secretary Hillary Clinton has been advocating for an alternative. She said California must build abortion into its state constitution with Proposition I. Already 13 states have banned this often-life-saving procedure.
The former Secretary of State arrived at San Francisco’s Planned Parenthood. Women in a sea of hot-pink wear greeted Clinton. It was a the audience’s statement of support for Prop I.
The U.S. Constitution no longer guarantees women the right to control their bodies. Instead, gray-haired Republican men will do that now. Texas’ new anti-abortion law makes abortions illegal. And it legalizes men hunting down women who may have had an abortion for a $10,000 bounty, according to NPR.
Californians have raised $9.2 million for Proposition I compared to its antagonists’ $70,000. But as the former first lady pointed out, even that was no guarantee. She said according to The Mercury News:
‘Will it win? Yeah, most likely, if people open their ballots sitting on their kitchen counters, it will win.In California you get delivered a ballot and thank goodness you do, but it does no good if people don’t open it up and actually fill it out. There has to be more energy, more visibility and excitement about the opportunity to vote.’
Clinton brought a world view to women’s right to choose. As secretary of state, she saw the terrible consequences of banning abortions and shared some of that with the crowd:
‘How many women have to die or be terribly mistreated in order to change these laws that are so Draconian?’
California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California President & CEO Jodi Hicks all attended. They agreed with Clinton.
When Secretary Clinton traveled to other countries as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state, she saw very intrusive” consequences of China’s one-child policy. In Romania, women were forced to have five children, Clinton said. But it got worse, according to the NBC Bay Area News:
‘The government used secret police to follow women and required physical exams at workplaces to determine if a woman was pregnant.’
The former presidential candidate told of an Irish woman dying after a partial miscarriage. She was refused an abortion and then died from an infection caused by her condition. That led Ireland to reverse its ban on abortions.
Clinton spoke of the “very sad” preventable deaths she saw coming to America:
‘We’re going to have to get through this really dark period before enough actual cases spark that kind of reaction nationally that is required.’
Just 45 percent of California’s voters even realize the measure is on their ballots, Kounalakis commented. Hicks added that unless America changes its laws and codifies the right to abortion:
‘We cannot take anything for granted. So if we don’t do everything we can, including shoring up our own constitution in our state, then shame on us. Because we are now without that backstop. We are one election away from losing our rights every single time in every election, no matter where you live. You can’t say we’re in California, we’re fine.’
Timmaraju noted that Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wanted a federal ban. She said:
“If that happens and you haven’t passed Prop. 1, it’s devastation for your state.’
Governor Gavin Newsom signed the State Senate Bill 245 into law. Now, abortion services are free for women with insurance beginning next year.
