In a new Ohio Northern University Poll, Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH) has taken the lead over Donald Trump’s pick, an acquiescent J.D. Vance. The new poll shows the Democrat ahead of the Republican by two percentage points.

This improvement was good news for Democrats who have been standing on the knife’s edge of winning or losing the Senate and the House. Representative Ryan entered the Senate race to take the retiring Republican Senator Rob Portman’s seat.

According to Ohio Northern University pollster Dr. Robert Alexander

‘Although a long-shot, it would appear that Tim Ryan has a legitimate chance to flip a Senate seat that would have been unthinkable six months ago. In a time where few voters split their tickets, it is likely that Ohio will witness a significant number of DeWine-Ryan voters in November.’

Dr. Alexander added that “the issue of abortion will likely bring more Democrats and Independents” out to vote:

In a state that has moved to the right politically, the issue of abortion will likely bring more Democrats and Independents to the polls than might typically be expected in Midterm election. This will be a key if Tim Ryan is to have any chance at all in upsetting JD Vance.’

Ohio Northern University’s poll found Ryan ahead with 43 percent compared to Vance’s 41 percent. A full 79 percent of Democrats supported Ryan in the poll, while only 65 percent of Republicans were behind Vance. But when it came to moving across party lines for a candidate, 18 percent of the polls Republicans would cross over to Ryan. That was twice the number who would do so for Vance, nine percent.

The POLITICO reported that the ultra-conservative Vance warned the members of his own party that the Democrats wanted “more and more immigration…[to] ensure that Republicans are never able to win again:”

‘Vance was asked Monday about his past warnings of immigrant influence, replying that Democratic leaders are “very explicit about that, they say they want more and more immigration because if that happens, they’ll ensure that Republicans are never able to win another national election.’

The new Ohio Northern University Poll was completed from October 11 through 15 among 668 likely Ohio voters. The poll’s margin of error was +/- 3.8 percentage points.

A USA Today-Suffolk University Poll released on Monday showed Vance leading by 2 points instead of losing by 2 points, giving the Republican 47 percent to Ryan’s 45 percent. That poll’s margin of error was +/- 4.4 percentage points, which made the poll less reliable than the Ohio Northern University Poll.
