In a surprise move, Representative Jim Clyburn (D-SC) appeared on Fox News and defended his historical comments about “parallels” between Donald Trump and the 1930’s Nazi party. It was an attempt to reach some of Fox News Sunday audience and enlighten them.

The show’s host Shannon Bream said that the senior congressman frequently made comparisons between Germany’s dictator, Adolph Hitler, and the previous U.S. president, according to The Rolling Stone:

‘You’ve repeatedly made comments about Hitler, about Nazism, about Germany in the 1930s in recent years. You’ve gotten a lot of pushback from that from Jewish organizations and others who say it belittles the suffering of the Holocaust, of the millions who lost their lives. Your response?’

Representative Clyburn delved right into the meat of his argument–that Trump has been using the same tactics as the German dictator, Adolf Hitler. As soon as the ex-president came into power he called the media, “the enemy of the people.”

Clyburn noted that America appears to be following in Hitler’s footsteps. He pointed out that Americans frequently believe the U.S. could not become ruled by a dictator. And that was true because we had “the greatest democracy going.” In Germany was the exact time Hitler took over the media, the representative said:

‘This country is on track to repeat what happened in Germany when it was the greatest democracy going, when it elected a chancellor that then co-opted the media.’

The 45th president has long admired dictators. And when he was the leader of the free world, many tolerated Trump’s off-the-wall actions, The Washington Post reported. The former president said that North Korea’s President Kim Jong Un wrote him “a love letter. And we fell in love.”

The New York Times reporter Susan Glasser and her husband The New Yorker reporter Peter Baker wrote an in-depth book on the Donald Trump presidency. She said that the previous president admired Hitler and wished “his” military was more like that of Nazi Germany.

On Sunday, Clyburn expanded his comments. He noted that “[I was] born and raised in a parsonage. I know a whole lot about religion, and I know [in fascism] there is always an attempt to co-opt religion:”

‘I’ve talked to many Jews, there are many Jews in my congressional district… and they know that this is the stuff that caused those kinds of deteriorations in democracy. This is not anything about how difficult it was. I talk about slavery and how difficult it was. But to discuss the facts of what’s going on here, election deniers setting up procedures by which local committees… can overturn the results of the election. To call the press the enemy of the people. To co-opt evangelicals. I grew up in a Christian faith. [I was] born and raised in a parsonage. I know a whole lot about religion, and I know [in fascism] there is always an attempt to co-opt religions, and that is what’s going on here.’

Representative Clyburn has been a lifelong student of history and then a professor of history. He said “there are parallels between the Americans and the Germans. The adopted home of Hitler’s economy was thriving right before it fell to Hitler:”

‘If people want to deny it, that’s fine, but the facts are very clear. I’ve studied history all of my life. I taught history. And I’m telling you, what I see here are parallels to what the history was in this world back in the 1930s in Germany, in Italy.’

Bream asked his guest:

‘Are voters… to infer from what you’re saying that if they don’t vote for Democrats in this election that they are somehow supporting something akin to the rise of Hitler?’

Clyburn clarified, saying that he was specifically talking about people who support candidates who lie about the legitimacy of elections:

‘No. If they don’t vote against election deniers. If they don’t vote against liars, people who lie, knowing full well they’re lying, we all know they’re lying. [The 2020 election] was the cleanest election in the history of the country. Donald Trump’s own appointee said it was the cleanest in the history of the country.

‘So if they’re lying, they’re denying, they’re drying to delete, they’re trying to nullify votes. vote against that foolishness.’

Trump wanted a parade with all of America’s military weapons on show. One day he complained to then-Chief of Staff John Kelly, Glasser and Baker wrote in The New Yorker.

‘You fucking generals, why can’t you be like the German generals…The German generals in World War II.’

Then Kelly ended the conversation with:

‘You do know that they tried to kill Hitler three times and almost pulled it off?’
