Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is keeping up her opposition to former President Donald Trump as he prepares for what seems like a formal announcement of his 2024 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

As time goes on, it’s getting less clear that Trump can actually clinch the nomination. The tide of polling showing Trump losing to Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in a GOP primary match-up is growing, and it’s not just a moral consideration that could drive Republicans away from him. It’s also something strategic, meaning it’s no longer just a question of kind of waiting around to see if Republicans finally decide to put ethics above party. Trump and his candidates keep losing. In the midterms, Donald’s picks for Senate lost in Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, and his candidates for governor also lost in a slew of states. And you know who’s not losing? Ron DeSantis, who was recently re-elected by a margin of nearly 20 percent. He’d no doubt be destructive, policy-wise, if elected president, but will Republicans finally reckon with the fact Trump is objectively a massive loser?

“Donald Trump is very clearly a very dangerous man,” Cheney said when asked in an interview this Tuesday about her postmortem take on the Trump rise to power. “I don’t think that we appreciated how dangerous he was. I think that post the election of 2020 and post-January 6, there’s absolutely no excuse and no defense. Nobody can now claim we don’t know how dangerous he is, because we’ve all watched it and lived through it.”

Questioned about her thoughts regarding the former president’s state of mind and the state of the Republican primary race as a whole, Cheney added: “This is certainly not the roll-out I’m sure Donald Trump wanted for his announcement tonight. But it’s also not the first time he’s been totally detached from reality. I think though it’s also really important for people to look at what’s happening and what he’s doing not just through a political lens but through the basic facts of his total lack of fitness for office. He’s unstable. The January 6 committee has laid out very clearly his direct and personal involvement in every aspect of the plan to overturn the last election. He’s someone who, knowing that the mob was armed, sent them to march on the Capitol… There’s no question that he’s unfit for office, and I feel confident that he will never be president again.”

GOP Senators are distancing themselves, DeSantis’s popularity likely helped the GOP win super-majorities in both chambers of the Florida state legislature, and what’s Trump doing? Whining and facing multiple criminal investigations. Check out Cheney’s comments below:
