Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who has recently been the subject of Senate speculation, is prepared for another Trump campaign for the presidency.
Donald officially announced his 2024 bid this past Tuesday evening with a speech at his Florida resort known as Mar-a-Lago, although with his nearly endless hints at his intentions in the months prior, it wasn’t much of a surprise. Some of the newer changes in course for the presidential race include that it seems Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis has an increasing chance of defeating Trump in a 2024 primary, should the recently re-elected chief executive decide to actually run. It’s not immediately clear where any of the speculation specifically started, but DeSantis has long been floated as a potential candidate. His resounding victory in his race for re-election as Trump-backed candidates struggled in other states and a growing tide of polling from both mainstream and more partisan sources showing DeSantis leading Trump at both the federal and state levels are further boosting his profile.
DeSantis even seems to have helped the GOP in his state to other significant victories, including super-majorities in both chambers of the state legislature and a new GOP spot in the U.S. House from northern Florida, where DeSantis’s preferred redistricting map reshaped a locale currently represented by Rep. Al Lawson (D), who is Black. Lawson recently lost his race for re-election in a defeat some saw coming because of the changed district boundaries.
“New Trump campaign. Same old lies,” Schiff said Tuesday. “Lies about his record. Lies about immigrants. Lies about Biden. Lies about our children. Lies about our LGBTQ+ neighbors. Lies on top of lies on top of lies. New grift. Same old grifter.” Other Democrats, like President Biden’s own team, are also preparing. “We beat him before. We will beat him again,” Schiff added on his personal account this week. “We will protect our democracy. Whatever the challenge may be. We will never surrender to his lies and his hate. We will persevere.” Voting at any stage of the 2024 race isn’t for awhile, but the campaign is starting.
