Mitt Romney Torpedoes MAGA GOP Plan To Impeach Joe Biden

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) isn’t thrilled about the prospect of House Republicans in their newfound majority pursuing impeachment against Joe Biden or top officials in his administration, like Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Someone has to commit a high crime or misdemeanor for that to be a valid inquiry,” the Utah Senator and frequent target of Trump said. “I haven’t seen any accusation of that nature whatsoever. There are a lot of things I disagree with … but that doesn’t rise to impeachment.” Romney, of course, was the only Republican Senator who voted in favor of conviction after both of Trump’s impeachments. He has also recently spoken out against both Trump dining with far-right extremists Ye (Kanye West) and Nick Fuentes and him recently pushing the prospect of suspending the Constitution to get him back in power, either through redoing the last election or declaring him the winner. It’s not great for the potentially next presidential nominee from one of the major parties to be just openly pushing doing away with the basic electoral process, past and future.

Two other GOP Senators already raised the prospect of impeaching Mayorkas. A press release from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) ominously noted the high numbers of “encounters” at the southern border — without noting how many of those “encountered” by border agents were turned away. Separately, there have also already been several pushes for impeaching Biden, including with the predictable involvement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). It’s not even a sure thing the House could pass an impeachment measure considering the only thin GOP majority that will take power in January, but it seems set that some will be clamoring for it. House GOP leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has already raised the prospect of impeaching Mayorkas.

McCarthy formally secured the GOP’s nomination for the Speaker role in the new Congress, but becoming Speaker requires a majority vote across the chamber, and several far-right members have already expressed opposition to McCarthy assuming the role, making it unclear that he’ll secure the required support. In a CNN interview about priorities for the new Congress, McCarthy also mentioned the border. “You’ve got to get control over the border. You’ve had almost 2 million people just this year alone coming across,” McCarthy said — brazenly misrepresenting the facts. Over 1 million of the people he cited were turned away just under rules originating under the Trump administration during the pandemic. If very large quantities of fentanyl have been seized at the southern border, as Cruz also ominously noted, then that means the border isn’t “open”!
