Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), a member of the House’s January 6 Select Committee, slammed another House member for “inappropriate” language. The Maryland legislator said that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was way out of line.
Then, Raskin chewed up Greene for her crass comments then spit her out. He indicated that even as a “joke,” the Peach State legislator was completely “inappropriate:”
‘If you and Bannon organized the violent insurrection against our government on 1/6 you’d be going to jail with everyone else convicted of seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to interfere with a federal proceeding. These are crimes, not stupid laugh lines.’
Greene spent her weekend bragging that with her at the helm of the January 6 failed coup, the Republican darling would have armed her insurrectionists and “won.”
Raskin and the other members of the Select Committee have planned to release their report this coming week. Pundits anticipate that the January 6 Committee will make criminal referrals to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
For example, the Select Committee believed that Donald Trump’s advisor John Eastman would be among those referred for alleged crimes. This Trump attorney wrote the “coup memo” showing how then-Vice President Mike Pence could have thrown the election to Trump by not certifying the presidential election results.
Rep. Jamie Raskin appeared on MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace’s Monday. The Maryland representative said Trump “unleashed” the monsters of the twentieth century, The Real Clear Politics reported:
‘America itself is the story of people struggling for a more perfect union. And every generation has had to struggle to improve the country, and we began, everybody knows, as a slave republic, but today, here we are, still, even with Donald Trump at large, the greatest multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural constitutional democracy on earth. Still, the wonder of the world to people all over the place.’
Then Raskin continued:
‘We have got to keep struggling to make ourselves a more perfect union if we’re going to keep moving things in the right direction because Donald Trump has unleashed a lot of the monsters of the last century against us. The racism, the authoritarianism, the anti-semitism, neo-fascism. All of those things are out there, and so, Americans have got to hang tough in order to defend our democracy and to keep it growing, because democracy is always a thing that’s in motion, getting better all the time.’
Greene included Trump confidante Steve Bannon in her fictional plan that would have overthrown the U.S. government. The man who seems to always wear at least two shirts has already been convicted of criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to honor the Committee’s subpoena.
And Greene admits she would have armed the insurrectionists, Yahoo News reported.
‘I will tell you something, if Steve Bannon and I organized that, we would have won. Not to mention, it would have been armed.’
Later, Greene left this statement calling her so-not-funny words “sarcasm:”
‘[She was] making fun of Joe Biden and the Democrats, who have continuously made me a political target since January 6.’
White House spokesman Andrew Bates spoke to Yahoo News:
‘It goes against our fundamental values as a country for a Member of Congress to wish that the carnage of January 6th had been even worse, and to boast that she would have succeeded in an armed insurrection against the United States government.’
Greene was elected to the House in 2020. But she lost her committee assignments shortly thereafter for promoting:
‘[C]onspiracy theories, including QAnon, and threats of violence against other politicians as well as racist and antisemitic comments.’
There were 140 police officers injured in the “hand-to-hand” combat. And a minimum of seven people died as a result.
