There is a second grand jury in place until next March as a result of the Department of Justice’s investigations into Donald Trump and the ex-POTUS’ circle. The grand jury is considering this crew’s activities in and around the January 6 attempt to overthrow the U.S. Government. Smith’s latest subpoena gave away the grand jury that had been put in place in November and designated as “#22-5.”
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) received a subpoena from this grand jury. A spokesperson for the Washington D.C. Federal District Court Lisa Klem said that there was a natural reason for the older grand jury to give way. This jury was seated in May to hear evidence regarding the attempted coup, The Bloomberg News reported. Its term simply expired.
Those who give testimony to the grand juries need not keep the strict secrecy rules afforded other investigations.
Special counsel Jack Smith also sent a subpoena to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania officials. County Communications Director Amie Downs said, according to CNN.
‘Yes, we received a subpoena from the Department of Justice’s special counsel regarding the 2020 election. We have nothing further to share or provide,’
Thus far, Smith has subpoenaed officials in a total of seven states. These states had been put in Trump’s sites as possible vehicles for his coup to work. These were: Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Each state had been targeted to flip votes and/or sabotage the Electoral College results.
President Joe Biden (D) won the Allegheny County count by 81,000 votes. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court argued last November against Trump:
‘[W]hile constituting technical violations of the Election Code, [the mistakes] do not warrant the wholesale disenfranchisement of thousands of Pennsylvanian voters.’
It was only last month that Attorney General Merrick Garland selected Smith to investigate the diverse ways Trump has tried to throw the election to himself. In the end, Garland will make the decision whether to charge the ex-president with crimes — or not.
Smith has also been investigating the ex-president’s alleged theft of classified documents. The special counsel has been given 20 prosecutors to work the cases. Indeed, the man who was formerly at The Hague has already called quite a few of Trump’s people to the grand jury with a subpoena. Those individuals include the ex-president’s former speechwriter and advisor Stephen Miller, three of Trump’s closest aides, and two previous White House attorneys.
The special counsel has also been investigating the ex-president’s alleged theft of classified documents. The propaganda machine that is Fox News has already been touting Smith as “compromised,” according to Fox News.
