Recently, billionaire and new Twitter owner Elon Musk claimed an incident unfolded in southern California in which a man he called a “crazy stalker” followed a car carrying one of his children in search of the electric vehicle company CEO. Surprise! Information from police seriously undercuts the narrative Elon presented.

It was previously reported cops responded that night to the scene of the confrontation, or at least the portion of it captured on tape both by someone apparently on Musk’s team and the other man involved in the incident, but it’s now emerged why they were there: the man details suggest works for Elon allegedly hit the other man with his car after following him into a gas station parking lot. A couple of reports don’t explicitly specify whether the man Elon’s team member may have hit was inside or outside his car when the incident driving the police visit took place, although it allegedly happened as the other individual was leaving the lot. Musk posted a clip showing the man to Twitter, and in the ensuing furor the site booted an account using generally public info to track the location of Elon’s jet. It was already unclear there was any connection.

The incident didn’t occur particularly close to an airport where the jet would have landed, it was nearly a day since the last location update from the account, and a local police detective told The Washington Post there wasn’t evidence of a link — at least uncovered by cops. Brandon Collado, who identified himself as the other man involved in what happened, told police the assailant — not identified to cops on the scene as on Elon’s team — accused the man Musk later singled out of trailing his car on the freeway. Collado said he was just using his phone when parked at the station, where the security team member boxed him in with his car. Speaking with the Post, Collado revealed delusional beliefs about a personal connection to the musician known as Grimes, who has two children with Elon, and the singer actually lives near where the incident took place — although Collado said he was delivering for UberEats the night the confrontation unfolded.

Musk alleged that Collado leaped on the hood of the other car, a claim that would no doubt provide a lot in terms of showing his intentions — and for which no supporting evidence has seemingly emerged. The incident was also connected to the high-profile (although temporary) suspensions of several high-profile journalists on Twitter, at least some of whom reported on the account tracking Elon’s jet — although there’s no indication the bulk of those affected personally uncovered and distributed private location information. Although Collado was struck, no physical injuries were reported. The other individual apparently associated with Elon left before police arrived. Details of what happened hinge in large part on accounts shared with police by Collado.
