Adam Kinzinger Shames MAGA Morons For Dissing Zelenskyy

Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, Republicans in the House from Florida and Colorado, respectively, who both recently won their races for re-election to Congress — although Boebert’s winning margin was under half a percentage point, stayed seated during multiple standing ovations during a Wednesday speech from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Congress.

Opposition in their corner to U.S. support for Ukraine was already a thing. The idea no doubt aligns with their fanatical allegiance to an “America First” approach to everything, even if that means literally or metaphorically walling off the country from others outside it. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) already spoke against the idea of the House approving any additional aid for Ukraine once Republicans take control of the chamber early next year, although she’s not the only one controlling what legislators actually pass. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) joined those speaking out in disgust after Gaetz, Boebert, and a slew of other far-right Republicans made a show of sitting out standing ovations during Zelenskyy’s speech to Congress this week.

“I couldn’t imagine looking at myself in the mirror if i was @mattgaetz or @laurenboebert,” Kinzinger said on his personal account on Twitter. “Smugly sat on their hands while history was made and a real hero addressed us. Imagine caring more about performance art than actual human lives.” Others who reporter Andrew Solender noted at least on occasion conspicuously remained seated included Andrew Clyde and Jim Jordan, though Solender said the group all stood for standing ovations as Zelenskyy drew his speech to an end. It was the first trip the Ukrainian president made outside his country since Russia kickstarted the ongoing war in Ukraine with a (further) invasion targeting essentially the entire nation in February. With the support of weapons from the U.S., Ukrainian service members have repeatedly turned Russian military leaders back in their ambitions. Ukrainians protected the capital, Kyiv, and the country’s defense also drove Russian troops back from Kharkiv, the second-largest city in the country. Russian troops departing on the ground hasn’t meant threats vanishing, as Putin’s military has continued airstrikes.
