Marjorie Greene Publicly Berates Matt Gaetz As GOP Implosion Intensifies

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) remains not exactly thrilled with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) — which in practical terms suggests it could be difficult for these people to launch much of a unified front against Democratic policies and what Americans want but the MAGA fanatics oppose.

Of course, the Democratic majority in the Senate and continued Democratic control of the White House already meant it would be difficult for the new Republican majority in the House in which Greene and Gaetz have found themselves to get a lot done that’s beyond the basics of running the government. Greene, though, evidently remains mad at Gaetz for his prior opposition to House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become House Speaker. The Republican majority in the new Congress was thin enough that Gaetz and allies of his were able to derail McCarthy’s efforts for days, leaving Democrats closer in many of the votes that were held to actually hitting the needed majority and seating a Speaker.

Gaetz tried to boost his own profile this week with support on Twitter for Greene’s new committee roles in Congress. “She’s going to do amazing work for the people on these key committees she has EARNED,” he said. Greene replied in brusquely dismissive terms. “Thanks to @SpeakerMcCarthy & Steering for voting me on the committees I requested on the submission form most of us filled out,” Greene said. “Too bad we’re weeks behind after you spent a week only getting MTV from 5 to 1. As the leading MAGA voice in Congress, I look forward to committees.” She held no committee roles for much of the last Congress after the full House voted on a bipartisan basis to remove her, eventually along with Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) — who like Greene will also be serving on the House Oversight Committee for the next roughly two years.

White House spokesman Ian Sams expressed concerns about Republicans also picking Reps. Lauren Boebert and Scott Perry for the oversight panel, the latter of whom was closely involved in Trump’s push against the 2020 presidential election and defied a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, raising obviously serious questions about what his supposed commitment to oversight actually is. “However, with these members joining the Oversight Committee, it appears that House Republicans may be setting the stage for divorced-from-reality political stunts, instead of engaging in bipartisan work on behalf of the American people,” Sams said, later adding that “Republicans are handing the keys of oversight to the most extreme MAGA members of the Republican caucus who promote violent rhetoric and dangerous conspiracy theories.”
