Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) didn’t sound thrilled with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) stopping by CNN to criticize the Georgia Congresswoman’s record, including incitement of violence, but Ocasio-Cortez adeptly shut down Greene’s oddly sexist complaints.
“@RepAOC I have repeatedly asked you to debate me, but you have been a coward and can’t even respond,” Greene petulantly posted on Twitter. “But you go on @CNN and lie about me. When are you going to be an adult and actually debate me on policy instead of run your mouth like a teenage girl?” It’s bizarre for Greene to compare Ocasio-Cortez conducting a fairly routine interview to the actions of a “teenage girl,” an insult obviously specifically tied to the New York Congresswoman’s gender. Ocasio-Cortez is not somehow obliged to reply affirmatively to Greene doing the rhetorical equivalent of showing up outside her office window and yelling out demands for a debate. That’s objectively just not standard or sensible. Sure, plenty of conservatives seem to like hearing themselves complain in increasingly delusional terms, but that doesn’t mean it connects to any reasonable frame of reference or policy approach.
“Hey there! In case you forgot, we sit on the same committee, which debated for the first time this week,” Ocasio-Cortez quipped in response to Greene. “I don’t blame you if you forgot. You spent almost no time there. In the few minutes you did show up, you claimed one elementary school got *$5 billion dollars* to teach CRT.” Ocasio-Cortez is referring to the House Oversight Committee, where Greene also distinguished herself in her initial participation there by claiming Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt was “murdered,” which is not a legal determination that’s actually been made, despite a Justice Department investigation.

Greene had some of her own replies, as though she was approaching the situation like it was a legal dispute where everybody gets a chance to keep chiming in, and for some reason she complained specifically to Ocasio-Cortez about a business that puts on reading events with drag queens. Besides the other obvious issues with Greene and other Republicans incessantly targeting drag queens with blatant deception, it’s rather odd for the Georgia Congresswoman to complain so feverishly on the government finances front about the disputed organization receiving under $7,000 in pandemic assistance. That didn’t exactly break anybody’s bank! Greene also complained about financial support for the furtherance of “tree equity,” questioning the nature of the concept — which it would have taken the Congresswoman less than 30 seconds to search for on Google if she was really that concerned. (The idea deals with expanding where trees are planted to assist in bettering certain communities.)
