A new CNN poll shows that 72 percent of those who watched President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Speech (SOTU) approved of it. And that included 43 percent of the Republicans. President Biden was in his element as a former senator when he gave his 2023 address. And he took on the MAGA party hecklers with the ease of an old pro.
CNN interviewers measured how well the sitting president did both before and after the State of the Union. A full 72 percent of Americans watching the speech were positive about President Biden’s performance. And of that number, 34 percent had a very positive opinion.
The audience’s response to “policies Biden has proposed will move the country in the right direction” showed a marked improvement, leaping a dramatic 19 points. Prior to the speech, 52 percent had a positive opinion, but that number skyrocketed to 71 percent following the SOTU. Among Independent voters, the percentage shot up even higher, 26 points, from 40 percent to 66 percent.
President Biden spoke about the GOP’s intent to take down Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Rick Scott (R-FL) chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee and planned to make the nation’s support institutions sunset. And he would make them renewable every five years, according to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow blog.
In 2022, 71 percent of President Biden’s audience felt positive about the president’s speech, and 41 percent reacted very positively.
However, presidents usually draw friendly watchers. The poll leaned to the left with around eight percent more Democrats than others. That translated into a less partisan group than in previous years for both the president and Donald Trump
The interview was via text message among 552 random U.S. adults who watched the address. The margin of error was +- 5.7 points, which was considerably higher than most.
