Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) generally stays within party lines, but sometimes served as a welcome voice of reason while the twice-impeached ex-president who lost the popular vote twice and tried to stage a coup was in office. Since the election of President Joe Biden, Romney has not often separated from his party, but was quick to do so amidst a host of criticism against Biden for his handling of the white spy balloon tied to the Chinese government that was spotted over American soil and was later subsequently shot down out of the sky.

Republicans, as is usual, were critical of Biden’s decision to wait to act on the balloon until it was more safely over water. Sen. Romney, however, defended Biden’s decisions, calling his handling of the balloon “skillful.” Instead of immediately jumping on the bandwagon, Romney stood separately from his GOP colleagues and is sure to have angered some of his own party members during interviews with the press.
According to The Daily Beast:
‘U.S. defense officials waited to shoot the balloon to prevent falling debris from hurting people on the ground, Biden told reporters last week. Meanwhile, Romney’s fellow Republicans are slamming Biden for not shooting down the balloon sooner, with Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) telling CNN the U.S. should have never let the surveillance mechanism even enter the country.’
