It does not appear that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) lives in reality.
She recently took to her personal Twitter account to advocate for splitting apart the United States according to the terms of what she referred to in deceptively innocuous terms as a national divorce. (She’s not the first person to promote this idea.) Greene’s concept was that the United States could be divided into two new countries based on the division between ostensibly “red” and so-called “blue” states, a notion that fails on rhetorical front after front. In purely logistical terms, in what category would Georgia fall? Its governor is a two-term Republican, but its two Senators — one of whom won another stint in office just last year! — are Democrats, and Biden won there in 2020. What about the millions of Republicans in California? What about the issue of the total lack of geographical continuity between these meaningless divides?
States Biden won on the West Coast don’t connect with states he won in the Midwest or still other states he won in the Northeast, which doesn’t seem like an effective method for constructing a country’s borders. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) was among those speaking out against Greene for her nonsense.
“Marjorie Taylor Greene — Kevin McCarthy’s most loyal lieutenant — is calling for secession,” Schiff observed Monday. “Literally saying the country should split apart between red and blue states. A dangerous, vile proposal. So much for her pledge of allegiance to one nation, under God, indivisible.” Others who have also criticized Greene’s delusions include former Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom served in office as Republicans.
While Greene’s notions are obviously clownish, her stance could nonetheless help inspire further political violence like what the U.S. saw during the deadly attack on the Capitol inspired by Trump’s false claims about the election. Greene, meanwhile, just keeps posting more lies. “I’m fed up with our American government and Biden supporting the war in Ukraine and doing absolutely NOTHING to protect America’s border,” she posted. “Help me fund a national ad campaign to STOP WWIII! I’m raising money to put ads all over the USA to demand our government work for us NOT Zelenskyy.” It is an absolute lie to insist the Biden administration isn’t doing anything at the southern border, it’s a laughable idea to imagine that petulant ads from Greene would change the policy stance of the federal government, and it’s simply incorrect to suggest the war in Ukraine is in imminent danger of escalating to World War III. NATO exists for a reason.
