Jim Jordan Hit With Criminal Accusations For Trying To Thwart Justice For Trump

Among the unsurprising crowd gathering to throw their fervent support behind Donald Trump as he faces a possibly looming indictment is Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who leads the House Judiciary Committee and with other Republicans has issued new demands for Alvin Bragg, the locally elected district attorney in Manhattan who would be bringing the expected case.

Jordan’s letter, also signed by Bryan Steil and James Comer, who lead the House Administration and Oversight committees, respectively, outlines some extremely broad investigative requests, including a push for all conversation records and documents associated with the same showing former members of Bragg’s team Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz discussing Trump. Everything! Simply complying with such a request could be a monumental effort — not to mention the demand Jordan and his colleagues also included for all conversation and other documentary records showing the usage by Bragg’s office of federal funds, which are made available nationwide.

“Dear @Jim_Jordan: Local prosecutors, including DA Bragg, owe you nothing,” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said. “In fact, it is illegal for you and @JudiciaryGOP to interfere in an ongoing criminal investigation, or a criminal trial (if there is one).” Lieu is on Jordan’s committee.

Jordan’s letter is also full of threateningly presented accusations about the supposedly assuredly political nature of Bragg’s potential case — although as Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) noted in a television interview, it’s not even Bragg who would be making the final decision about potentially prosecuting Trump. That choice falls to the grand jury that’s been hearing evidence in the case, which concerns hush money illegally provided to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. In general, the GOP letter leans heavily on speculation, asserting, for instance that the “only intervening factor, it appears, was President Trump’s announcement that he would be a candidate for President in 2024.” A lot else also took place between earlier, stalled portions of the probe and now, but whatever, Jim. The letter also predictably attacks the credibility of Michael Cohen and clamors against the legal theory on which the case may be based, as though a less expansively developed legal record is reason to dump a case without further consideration.
