President Joe Biden delivered a speech this week in Ireland and received what footage showed was a roaring welcome from the crowd of onlookers.

Ahead of the 2024 election, in which it could turn out that he again faces Donald Trump in the general election match-up, Biden spoke of his family ties to Ireland, trips he has taken to the country with members of his family, and the push for progress. As he has before, he spoke of the current juncture of history as a particularly potent point where much can be done.

“Ladies and gentlemen, our world today stands at an inflection point where the decisions we make today are going to affect our futures for decades to come,” he said. “And it’s in these moments where we need hope and courage more than ever. We’re facing enormous challenges around the world — challenges that are too great for any one country to solve alone.” Biden continued from there, as you can see further down.

Compare these sentiments with Trump’s nearly endless remarks characterizing the United States as essentially on the brink, whether in general or specifically in regards to his own problems. For instance, Trump spoke of so-called death and destruction accompanying criminal charges against him that have since emerged in New York City. (Surprise: there was no “death.”)

“The Biden Department of Injustice, together with all of the corrupt, TRUMP HATING, puppeteers that surround Joe Biden, and are destroying our Country, are going all out with ELECTION INTERFERENCE through the use of Fake, Partisan, and Corrupt Prosecutors,” Trump said in a recent post online. He uses similar rhetoric basically all the time as he continues to generally lead in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, despite a couple of declared candidacies and whatever on earth Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, is doing. Ron’s interest in expanding his profile beyond his state seems obvious, and yet, he hasn’t actually confirmed a campaign.

In his speech in Ireland, Biden referenced issues including food insecurity, the climate crisis, and the war waged in Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s forces. “My friends, people of Mayo: This is a moment to recommit our hearts, our minds, our ardent souls to the march of progress; to lay the foundations, brick by brick by brick, for a better future for our kids and our grandkids — one of greater liberty, opportunity, and dignity, just like our ancestors did for us,” Biden told the crowd. “I have never been more optimistic, and I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve never been more optimistic about what we can achieve if we stick together and stick to our values. This is a time of enormous possibilities. And united by history, heritage, and hope, and, maybe most of all, by courage, nothing is beyond our reach.” Watch below:
