There has been even more revealing reporting about the financial relationship between U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and the ultra-wealthy GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, exposing that Crow — well, a company in his array of business ventures — purchased multiple properties in Georgia from sources including Thomas. The sales, which included the longtime Thomas family residence where the judge’s elderly mother still lives, weren’t included in financial disclosure forms Thomas filed.

“Why did Justice Clarence Thomas not disclose these shady real estate transactions as required by the law?” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) recently asked on Twitter. “Because Justice Thomas knew what he was doing was corrupt. Justice Thomas must resign.” ProPublica, which is the media outlet responsible for the bulk of recent revelations about Thomas and Crow’s ties, noted that financial disclosure forms covering the time period when the sales took place included an array of other seemingly lower-stakes items, like a medallion from Yale University. With the pricey travel that Thomas and his wife, Ginni, have also enjoyed evidently without charge thanks to Crow, the judge apparently did disclose small portions of it — suggesting, as with the disclosure of those other items from the time of the sales in Georgia, an intentional omission.

Renovations at the Thomas family residence were kickstarted after the ownership change, which Crow has credited now that it’s exposed to an interest in historical preservation. Also purchased were what were then two vacant lots in the same area in which Thomas also had a financial stake, and in these lots’ vicinity, Crow has also been behind other property purchases as the area has been gradually updated.

“Clarence Thomas apparently violated the law when he failed to disclose that Crow bought property from him and his relatives,” Lieu said, discussing financial disclosure requirements. “Are the massive gifts and now money from Crow to Thomas corrupt? Probably. Does it have the appearance of corruption? Absolutely. Thomas must resign.”
