During a recent hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, where Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) remains a member despite the GOP push removing him from the Intelligence Committee in the same chamber, the California Congressman adeptly exposed the lack of substance behind GOP claims of support for the police and law enforcement.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) had separately helped introduce a proposal that, if enacted, would abolish the federal agency known as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Schiff offered an amendment to other legislation opposing that push. In his remarks, Schiff explained some of the serious functions the agency currently performs, including the execution of gun laws already on the rhetorical books and involvement with handling unique criminal threats like arson. Gaetz has accused the agency of ostensibly at least reckless overreach, particularly in its approach to firearms. “It is one of the clearest efforts to defund law enforcement, and given that this underlying bill is about expressing our opposition to efforts to defund law enforcement, I presume I’ll have the support of my colleagues to express opposition to that effort,” Schiff said.

Schiff then sought any input from Republican members on the committee regarding the initiative from the Florida Congressman targeting the disputed federal agency. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the committee chairman, said he backed Gaetz’s attempt to “send a message” to the agency… which is not what the plan, on paper, is about. In actuality, the initiative would abolish the agency. In remarks during this same exchange of words, Gaetz himself confirmed as much, making Jordan’s halfhearted response particularly laughable.
