Pennsylvania Democratic state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta says that a recent visit by two former police officers who, when still on the job, helped with defending the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was met with antagonism from Republicans in the legislative chamber.

“Today we welcomed two American heroes, Officer Harry Dunn @libradunn and Sergeant Aquilino Gonell to the Pennsylvania Capitol. A number of House Republicans literally booed, hissed, and walked off the floor — there is no bottom,” said a social media post from the Democrat, who added: “These men bravely held back the mob on Jan 6th to preserve our democracy in the face of a horrific attack fomented by the former President. I’m thankful for them speaking up and encouraging all Americans to back @JoeBiden. They know firsthand what chaos Trump would unleash if we don’t.”

Dunn and Gonell both participated in the comparatively early public hearing of the House committee that investigated the Capitol riot that spotlighted perspectives from police officers who participated in the Capitol complex’s defense amid the January 6 violence. Dunn unsuccessfully ran for Congress in Maryland. He also participated in a recent press conference put on by the Biden campaign outside Donald Trump’s recently concluded criminal trial in New York City. (Trump was found guilty on all counts by the jury.) There, Dunn characterized Trump as a threat to American democracy.

“Donald Trump is the greatest threat to our democracy and the safety of communities across the country today,” Dunn argued at a gathering outside the Trump courthouse also attended by actor Robert De Niro, about whom Trump complained afterwards. “He has encouraged, and continues to encourage, political violence. We’ve been called traitors — just today. We were all called traitors on January 6 for doing our job.”
