Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the top Democrat on the House Committee on Homeland Security, predicts that Vice President Kamala Harris would absolutely come out on top if she were to go up against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in a general election debate.

Harris is now Democrats’ presumptive presidential nominee for the year after the recent withdrawal from this year’s election of President Joe Biden, who endorsed Harris to take his place as he stepped aside.

She quickly assembled the support from Democratic convention delegates necessary to actually head towards the nomination, and there is no serious challenge among Democrats to Harris’ candidacy. Some of the prominent party members who might have contended with her for the nomination instead promptly endorsed her — though a Trump spokesperson claimed there was still too much uncertainty about who Democrats would eventually put forward for the general election to move forward at present with any plans to debate Harris.

Thompson shared a photo of a billboard that accused Trump of being “too chicken to debate.” “I believe he should spare himself the embarrassment! We all know she would wipe the floor with him. #TrumpIsWeird,” said a post to X — formerly Twitter — from the top Democrat, who also led the House committee that investigated the 2021 Capitol riot and circumstances leading up to it. That day’s events targeted and disrupted the scheduled certification by Congress of the 2020 presidential election results, meaning Joe Biden’s victory that year.

Harris, meanwhile, now must choose her own running mate, with possibilities including a handful of Democratic governors and Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. A hashtag pairing Harris and Buttigieg — already known as relatively outspoken — for an imagined presidential ticket for the year was trending on X this weekend.
