New polling from Bloomberg and Morning Consult measuring registered Michigan voters’ takes on the upcoming presidential election found a whopping lead for Vice President Kamala Harris of between 11 and 12 percentage points over Donald Trump in the state.
Harris is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee after the recent withdrawal from this year’s presidential election of President Joe Biden, who endorsed Harris to take his place.
When only Harris and Trump — the latter the Republican nominee — were named to poll participants, Harris’ lead was 11 percent. When other candidates from outside the major parties were also included, Harris’ leading margin moved up to 12 percent. Michigan, known as a swing state in presidential elections, infamously moved from Trump’s column in 2016 to a Biden victory four years later, and the state was concurrently among those intensely targeted by Trump’s corner as the then-outgoing president and allies of his reacted harshly to Biden’s eventual victory.
And now, Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer — who won another term in office in 2022 — is a prominent Harris backer, joining as a co-chair for the latter’s campaign, which is what the Biden-Harris campaign became after Biden withdrew from the election. It’s all taking off dramatically, with the Harris campaign registering a whopping $200 million in fundraising — much of that from first-time donors — in its first week. Sign-ups to volunteer also surged.
Harris also quickly assembled support from other prominent Democratic governors, including California’s Gavin Newsom, Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker, Minnesota’s Tim Walz, and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro — some of whom have reportedly been under consideration to be Harris’ running mate for the year.
Harris’ public reveal of her running mate decision is reportedly on track for mere days into the future, with even more campaign trail appearances for the Democrats coming after that.
