In a television interview this Friday on daytime talk show “The View,” Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg asserted that some of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s latest outbursts towards Vice President Kamala Harris were meant as a distraction.
That includes Trump’s recent appearance at a convention of the National Association of Black Journalists, where the former president and current Republican contender suggested that Harris was being deceptive and/or manipulative in identifying as Black, although her father is from Jamaica. Essentially, Trump’s comments glossed right over the existence of biracial people. (Harris’ mother was from India.)
“This is a strategy on his part,” said Buttigieg of some of Trump’s latest attacks. “He didn’t just go blurt out racist remarks in an auditorium full of Black journalists for no reason. He did it for a very specific reason, which is to change the subject. He cannot afford for this election to be about the candidates’ plans for our lives.” Buttigieg then accused Trump of ambitions to cut taxes for high-earners and go after a women’s “right to choose,” meaning reproductive health care.
“These are not things that he can defend,” added the Cabinet official. “And they’re not things that he can afford for the American people to focus on. And he definitely doesn’t want this election to be about Kamala Harris’ plans for our lives. […] If the election is about the candidates’ plans for Americans’ lives, he will lose.” And Harris is “not going to let him” pull attention elsewhere, Buttigieg said.
Harris is the expected Democratic presidential nominee for this year’s election following the recent withdrawal from the race of President Joe Biden, who endorsed Harris. Buttigieg, in turn, is considered a possibility for Harris’ running mate for the year — the public reveal of which is apparently slated for coming days.
