UNITE HERE, a hospitality workers’ union with members across the U.S. and Canada, is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the nation’s second-in-command now runs for president after recently locking down the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination. And the union is getting moving politically on Harris’ behalf.
“UNITE HERE’s political program is known for delivering close elections in key battleground states. The union is already mobilizing its members to knock on over 3.3 million doors in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, and Michigan to ensure that Kamala Harris wins the Presidency,” said a press release from the union that was released Monday. Most of those states have been either swing states or particularly close in recent presidential elections. (Ohio seems to be the only exception, going by a slightly more sizable margin for Trump in both 2016 and 2020.)
United Auto Workers (UAW) also recently endorsed Harris for president, with the Harris campaign planning an imminent return to Michigan — a center of the auto industry in the United States.
Harris, meanwhile, is apparently finalizing her selection of a running mate for this year’s general election, with a return to the campaign trail already planned with whoever ends up joining Harris on this year’s Democratic ticket. By Monday, Harris’ consideration was reportedly focused on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz — chairman of the Democratic Governors Association — and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
Harris’ ascent to the front of the party after the recent withdrawal from this year’s election of President Joe Biden — who endorsed her replacing him — quickly translated into promising poll results at both the national level and in key, individual states like Michigan and Georgia. The trend reverses some of what was seen up until his departure from the race with Biden, with a steady stream of 2024 election polling that found narrow leads for Trump instead.
