UNITE HERE — a hospitality workers’ union with members across the United States and Canada — is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the nation’s second-in-command now runs for the presidency, recently locking down the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination.

The expected Democratic nominee for president until roughly the middle of July was President Joe Biden, but he withdrew from the election and endorsed Harris to replace him. And there was only a brief period of serious uncertainty after that point about whether Democrats would end up putting Harris forward for the election. Nobody within the party announced a serious challenge to her campaign, which the Biden-Harris campaign became.

“With Kamala Harris as President, workers will continue to move forward, organize their workplaces, and secure good wages and benefits. She has consistently demonstrated her commitment to labor rights and social justice, ensuring that every worker has a fair shot at the American dream. We’ve seen the blueprint for a second Trump administration in Project 2025, which aims to crush labor unions and hurt working families– we will not go back. It’s up to us to do our part to deliver victory in this race and UNITE HERE is ready to hit the doors,” said the union’s President Gwen Mills.

Though not exclusive to the state, the hospitality industry is particularly big in Nevada — known as not necessarily a swing state in recent presidential elections but still a close one. (They’ve not backed a Republican in the general election since 2004.)

United Auto Workers (UAW), another large union, also recently endorsed Harris ahead of a planned Harris campaign jaunt to Michigan, which is both a center of the U.S. auto industry and known as a crucial state in a presidential elections context. Current Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is serving as a co-chair for the Harris campaign.
