Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro was ultimately not chosen this week as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate for this year’s election, but Shapiro was nonetheless ready to get to work — again — for the Democratic ticket, he said.
“Over the next 90 days, I look forward to traveling all across the Commonwealth to unite Pennsylvanians behind Kamala Harris’ campaign to defeat Donald Trump, become the 47th President of the United States, and build a better future for our country,” the Pennsylvanian governor said on Tuesday.
He’s already been out on the campaign trail for Harris, insisting at one recent stop that Trump needs to stop “shit-talking America.” “I got a message to Donald Trump,” Shapiro said at the rally. “Stop shit-talking America! This is the greatest country on the face of the earth! Let’s start acting like it! I know that’s true! You know that’s true! He doesn’t know that’s true. He keeps talking us down. And he keeps trying to rip away our fundamental freedoms.”
Trump tends to take his animosity towards the Biden administration and elected Democrats out of the realm of mere policy disagreement, talking down instead on the direction of the country as a whole. At a June debate with President Joe Biden when the latter was still this year’s expected Democratic presidential nominee, Trump — again — referred to the U.S. as “failing.” Trump similarly calls out some high-profile cities, proclaiming doom and gloom.
Democrats are taking a much more forward-looking approach with their campaigning. “Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school,” said a social media message from Walz touting his new role on Democrats’ White House ticket.
It all seems to be going relatively promisingly for Democrats, who already saw solid poll results — including, specifically, a turnaround from some of Biden’s results — after Harris’ campaign kicked off.
