Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump drew scrutiny from observers this week with another public tirade on Truth Social, the Trump social media site that the former president uses how he used to utilize Twitter, now called X.

Trump posted about an imagined scenario in which President Joe Biden tries to get this year’s Democratic presidential nomination back from Vice President Kamala Harris after all, even though Biden is the one who withdrew from this year’s election amid questions about his age, endorsed Harris, and has made no public indication of regretting his decision to exit.

“What are the chances that Crooked Joe Biden, the WORST President in the history of the U.S., whose Presidency was Unconstitutionally STOLEN from him […] CRASHES the Democrat National Convention and tries to take back the Nomination, beginning with challenging me to another DEBATE. He feels that he made a historically tragic mistake by handing over the U.S. Presidency, a COUP, to the people in the World he most hates, and he wants it back, NOW!!!” Trump posted to Truth Social.

On top of the other problems, Biden didn’t hand off his presidency, just the Democratic Party’s mantle for this year’s presidential election. Biden is very much still serving as president.

“This is very disturbing. Trump sounds mentally unsound. Who talks like this? The independent voters listen to this unnerving and volatile ranting,” opined longtime military and political figure Barry McCaffrey.

Gregg Nunziata, executive director at the Society for the Rule of Law, was another to respond.

“In addition to the overall crazy: Cheap bigotry in the all caps HUSSEIN,” he wrote. “What does Trump think was “unconstitutional” in the events that led to Biden voluntarily choosing to not run for reelection? How, exactly, does he define “coup”? And to whom is this designed to appeal?” (Trump also referenced Obama in the full, original post, capitalizing the former president’s middle name.)
