As she now leads the Democratic Party into this year’s presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris stopped in Michigan this Wednesday. Michigan is known as a swing state in presidential elections, at least lately. It moved from a Trump win in 2016 to Joe Biden’s wins column the next time around.
And while in Michigan, Harris’ crowd started chanting “Lock him up!” referring to Trump — who is now, of course, a convicted felon who still faces a scheduled sentencing in September, though there are further proceedings to come before that point.
Harris addressed the chants. “The courts are going to handle that,” she said. “We’re going to beat him in November. We’re going to beat him in November.” The crowd cheered.
Harris and her campaign are in the process of introducing her running mate to supporters and the nation. She selected Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, who is currently the chair of the Democratic Governors Association and became known in recent years for helping spearhead the implementation of a raft of progressive policy in his state. That includes a universal free school lunch program, a series of gun reforms, and more. And Walz recently helped spur the campaign messaging that declares Trump and close allies of his to be “weird” in the most straightforward sense: off-putting and not fit for power.
The two already started hitting the campaign trail — in Harris’ case, again — on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, where the state’s Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro joined them.
And the promising poll results are still coming. New numbers from Marquette University Law School put Harris ahead of Trump by eight percentage points nationally among likely voters when poll participants were presented with a list of candidates including Harris, Trump, and several contenders outside of the two major parties.
